What is a “bookee”?

Derived from the word bookmark, a bookee is a term to describe a family of websites organized by interest.

Bookee allows you to organize your favorite websites and access them from any computer or smartphone with ease.

What is a “top bookee”?

Located on the top left column, top bookees contain sites used on a daily basis and arranged into 3 categories: Basic, Private and Business.

Basic: your country’s most popular sites pre-selected for you by Bookee, such as Google, MSN, Microsoft, Yahoo!, eBay, AOL, Amazon, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc. You may keep or delete them and add your own sites to this bookee at any time.

Private: all the sites you need to run your private life. Many of these sites require a login and a password, such as “myprivatebank.com”, “mysuppliers.com”, “mytaxes.com”, “myinvestments.com”, “mysubscriptions.com”, “myrewardprograms.com”, “myinformationsites.com”, etc. We have pre-selected a few sites to get you started. You may keep or delete them and add your own sites to this bookee at any time.

Business: all the sites that you use daily in business, depending on your activities: “mycompany.com”, “myintranet.com”, “mybusinessbank.com”, “mycompetitors.com”, “myunion.com”, search engines, market places, portals, etc. We have pre-selected a few sites to get you started. You may keep or delete them and add your own sites to this bookee at any time.

Can I create my own bookees?

Absolutely! There is no limit. You can create as many bookees or sub-bookees as you would like and you can also delete them if you choose.

What is a shared bookee?

Shared Bookees are just that, bookees which our members can exchange to discover new sites recommended by their fellow members.

Just type in one or two key words to search for your desired topic. If you decide to use the bookee of a fellow member, you will be able to rate it according to its originality.

How do I customize my homepage on Bookee?

As a member you can:

  • choose your favorite colors for bookee titles, links and frames. Just go to My Account then Customize
    • choose any city in the world to receive a 7-day weather forecast
    • display the sites contained in your bookees by line or by list
    • move your bookees anywhere around your BookeeDesk

What languages are available on Bookee?

Bookee is currently available in English and French but keep checking as we will be adding other languages in the near future.

What is the BookeeDesk?

The BookeeDesk is our term for your homepage

How do I change the location of my bookees on my homepage?

To move a bookee, simply click on the title bar , drag it to the desired location and unclick.

How do I change the font size on the BookeeDesk?

Most browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) offer the option of changing font size. Just go to view and then to zoom or text size.

How do I modify or delete a bookee?

You can modify or delete a bookee by clicking on the pencil icon located on the top right hand corner of the box. To modify a website contained within a bookee, simply click on its name and follow the instructions.

How do I add a new bookee?

To add a new bookee to your homepage, click on the “Add a bookee” sign located on the black bar at the top of your homepage.

What is a sub-bookee?

A sub-bookee allows you to organize your bookees by theme or topic. Just click on the sub-bookee icon located on the upper right hand corner of the box and follow the instructions.

How do I change languages on my homepage?

To change to the English or French version of Bookee, go to “Language” then click on the appropriate choice.

If you are using the English version of Bookee and want to share a bookee containing French websites forinstance, just switch to the appropriate language (go to "Language" then "Français") then create your bookee. It will immediately be made available to all Frenchspeaking members.

How do I import my bookmarks automatically into Bookee?

Whether you use Internet Explorer or Firefox as a browser, you can instantly import your bookmarks into Bookee.

For Internet Explorer users:

To export my bookmarks from Internet Explorer

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to “Add to Favorites” and click on “Import & Export”.
  • Click “Next” in the window called “Welcome to the Import/Export Wizard”
  • Click on “Export Favorites” then click “Next”.
  • Select “Favorites” then click “Next”.
  • Make a note of the location of the htm file called “bookmark by default” suggested in the frame “Export to a File or Address” then click “Next”.
  • Click “Finish”. A window will open to let you know that your favorites have been successfully exported.

To import my bookmarks into Bookee

  • On the Bookee website click on the vertical arrow located at the top right hand corner of the “other bookees” window (import your bookmarks automatically).
  • Click “Browse” and choose the document “bookmark” mentioned above (unless otherwise indicated, it should be located on your desktop).
  • Click “bookmark.htm” then click “Open”.
  • Wait a few seconds and go back to “Import your Bookmarks” on the Bookee website and click “Import”.
  • Wait a few seconds until you see your bookmarks. Select the files you want to import by clicking on the appropriate boxes and click “Import” at the bottom of the page.
  • You have successfully imported your bookmarks.

For Firefox users:

To export my bookmarks from Firefox

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to “Bookmarks” and then click on “Organize Bookmarks”.
  • The “Bookmarks Manager” window will open. Select the “Bookmarks” file in the left column then choose “File” and click on “Export”.
  • Click on “Desktop” in the left column and make note of the name of the file suggested by default in the frame “Name of the File” (usually “bookmarks”) and then click on “Save”.
  • Close the “Bookmarks Manager”.

To import my bookmarks into Bookee

  • On the Bookee website click on the vertical arrow located at the top right hand corner of the “Other bookees” window (Import your bookmarks automatically).
  • Click on “Browse” and choose the document “bookmark” mentioned above (unless otherwise indicated, it should be located on your Desktop).
  • Click on “bookmark.html” then click on “Open”.
  • Wait a few seconds and go back to “Import your Bookmarks” on the Bookee website and finally click on “Import”.
  • Wait a few seconds until you see your bookmarks. Select the files you want to import by clicking on the appropriate boxes and click on “Import” at the bottom of the page.
  • You have successfully imported your bookmarks.

I am having a problem sharing my original bookmarks with other Bookee members. What should I do?

By default, all bookees created by importing your favorites into Bookee are programmed NOT to be shared with other members in order to preserve your privacy. If you would like to share them with other members, click on the pencil icon located at the top right hand corner of the bookee (modify) and change the share icon for your desired bookee.

What is the « Add2bookee » button?

Buttons are links added to your browser's Personal Bar (Firefox) or Links Bar (Internet Explorer) to make it easier to manage your favorites. The « Add2bookee » button allows you to add a website to a bookee in one click.

Once installed on your browser’s Personal Bar (Firefox) or Links Bar (Internet Explorer), just click on the button each time you discover a site you want to add to one of your bookees.

How do I install the « Add2bookee » button on my browser’s Links or Personal Bar ?


For Internet Explorer 6 users:

Click on the « Add2bookee » link located at the bottom of the homepage and follow the instructions:

  • Right click on your browser’s Links Bar and make sure that « Links » is activated.
  • Right click on the « Add2bookee » link located below and choose « Add to Favorites ».
  • Select « Links » in the menu when asked « Create in » then click on « Add ».
  • The « Add2bookee » button is now installed on your browser’s Links Bar.
For Internet Explorer 7 and 8 users:

Click on the « Add2bookee » link located at the bottom of the homepage and follow the instructions:

  • Right click on your browser’s toolbar and make sure that « Favorites Bar » is activated.
  • Right click on the « Add2bookee » link located below and choose « Add to Favorites ».
  • Select « Favorites » in the menu when asked « Create in » then click on « Add ».
  • Go to Favorites, click on « Add2bookee » and drop it onto your browser Links Bar
  • The « Add2bookee » button is now installed on your browser’s Favorites Bar.
For Firefox users:

Click the « Add2bookee » link located at the bottom of the homepage and follow the instructions :

  • Click the « Add2bookee » link located below, drag and drop it into your browser’s Personal Bar.
  • The « Add2bookee » button is now installed in your browser’s Personal Bar.
For Safari users:

Click the « Add2bookee » link located at the bottom of the homepage and follow the instructions :

  • Click the « View » menu and select the « Show Bookmarks Bar » section.
  • Click on the « Add2bookee » link located below, drag it and drop it into your browser’s bookmarks Bar.
  • The « Add2bookee » button is now installed in your browser’s bookmarks Bar.
For Google Chrome users:

Click the « Add2bookee » link located at the bottom of the homepage and follow the instructions, i.e.:

  • Click the « Customize and Control Google Chrome » menu and select the « Always show bookmarks bar » section. It will display a check mark in front of it.
  • Click the « Add2bookee » located below, drag and drop it into your browser’s bookmarks Bar.
  • The « Add2bookee » button is now installed in your browser’s bookmarks Bar.

How do I use the « Add2bookee » button?

To add a new site to one of your bookees, click the « Add2bookee » button on your browser’s Links or Personal Bar, choose the bookee to which you want to add the site, check and validate the name of the site, then click « Add ».

Can I have access to my bookees from any computer?

With Bookee, you are just one click away from your favorite sites wherever you are in the world. Simply go to www.bookee.com and sign in. For your own protection sign out if you are using a public computer.

Can I have access to my bookees from my smartphone or my iPad?

You can download the Bookee application from the AppStore on your iPhone or iPad. Once identified by your email and password, you have direct access to all your bookees.

Bookee is in the process of developing an application for iPad, until then we recommend you use the website www.bookee.com, which works well on the iPad.

How to search for a bookee?

Type in the name of the bookee, one of the tags that characterizes it, or the name of a website contained within the bookee, then click Search.

You can enlarge your search to all existing bookees by clicking “Search all bookees” or alternatively “Search in all languages”.

How do I use a bookee of another member?

To use a bookee created by another member, simply click on “use this bookee” and it will appear at the bottom of your homepage. You can then use it as is and you can also add your own favorite links to it. If the creator of the bookee has agreed to it, he or she will be informed by mail each time a link is added. He will then decide if he wants to add your link to his bookee so that all users can benefit from your contribution.

What is the small character followed by a number appearing on some bookees?

The character and number indicate how many members are using that particular bookee, and therefore its popularity.

How are bookees rated?

We use a 5 star system, with 5 being the best. Simply click on the stars to vote. No need to vote more than once as only your first vote will be counted.

What is a tag?

A tag is a keyword which describes a bookee. We allow you to choose up to 3 tags for each bookee that you create. You can then modify them at any time to make the definition more precise. The more precise your tags, the easier to find a bookee.

Constantly updated, the list of tags located at the lower left hand corner of the Bookee homepage indicates the key words most frequently used by our members.

How do I set the date and time on my homepage?

Bookee automatically synchronizes the date and time on your computer.

Is Bookee a free service?

Yes, Bookee is entirely free.

Does Bookee have access to my password?

Bookee does not have access to your password. You can therefore use it securely.

I forgot my password. How do I retrieve it?

Click on the “Forgot my password” button and enter your email address. We will immediately send you an email making it possible for us to verify your identity and for you to safely choose a new password.

Does Bookee share my email address with anyone?

Bookee reserves the right to share the email address of its members with selected partners for the purpose of matching their centers of interest, so they may send specific offers.

What is an “RSS feed”?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, or Rich Site Summary. RSS feeds are used to alert you when a website you are interested in has been updated. It is typically used for information websites and blogs.

By subscribing to Bookee’s RSS feeds you are automatically notified when new bookees are added by members.

Can I share my bookees securely with other Bookee members?

Each time you create a bookee, we ask if you would like to share it with other members of Bookee. If you accept, all Bookee members will have access to it and will be able to add new sites to it, but your email address will never be shared with anyone.

Will I be notified when fellow members use my bookees or add new sites to them?

All members who share their bookees are given the option of being notified by email each time a member adds one or more sites to the original bookee.

How can I find my city’s weather forecast?

Bookee uses the international weather services of www.weather.com. If your location is not on the list enter the name of the nearest big city. To view the weather for the next seven days just click on Forecast.

How do I open a new page in a new tab?

For Internet Explorer users:

Go to "tools", then "Internet Options", then "General", then "Tabs". Click on "Settings" and make sure that the line "Always open pop-ups in a new tab" in the paragraph "When a pop-up is encountered:" is activated. Click "OK".

For Firefox users:

Go to "tools", then "Options", then "Tabs". Make sure that the line "A new tab" in the paragraph "New pages should be opened in:" is activated. Click "OK".

What is Top 5?

The top 5 lists the 5 most frequently used bookees by our members.

What is Last 5?

The last 5 displays the last 5 shared bookees added to Bookee by its members.

What is Today’s Hot Pick?

Any Bookee member can post their latest discovery in this section. The most suggested websites become Today’s Hot Pick so that everyone can discover them.
